Law and Society

Law is a way to give direction to society. Societal issues can be resolved by law. Sometimes however, the law and the problem are not clearly defined. This is the case by profiling and datamining by government authorities. We are going to answer questions like: can we do more with the data we have, or can we offer citizens personalized services. New in this honoursmodule is that we are not starting from the existing legal framework, but with concepts like personal autonomy, human dignity and the principle of equality. From this we will answer questions posed by one of the Netherlands largest government databases, the DUO. We will compare our findings with the existing legal framework and present new principles on datamining and profiling.
