All inclusive - our open academic community

The University of Groningen turns 405 this year! And so, we’re having a celebration from 5 to 15 June 2019. We believe that, even at this age, you are never too old to make new resolutions. Our 405th anniversary is themed ‘All Inclusive’. Of course, this means that everyone is invited to come and celebrate with us! It also means that we are setting ourselves a future goal. The University stands for teaching and research that can take place in freedom. In its 405 years of existence, the University has developed into a highly diverse community of around 6,000 staff members and 31,000 students of all ages and from more than 120 different countries. The UG considers this diversity an important aspect of academic success. Exceptional teaching and research benefits from an open academic community that hosts many different talents. Our differences are part of the deal and make us stronger. However, the power of diversity can only be harnessed if everyone can truly participate.

Responsibility

Since the UG has become a more diverse university, awareness of the responsibility that this entails has been growing. This responsibility is to strive for an inclusive university where everyone feels at home and flourishes. We realize that inclusion does not materialize out of thin air; it requires effort and willpower. The UG aims to create an inclusive environment in which all of its students and staff members can actively participate and where their input is valued, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, life philosophy, religion and occupational or functional disability. This all serves the goals of independent research, intellectual freedom and freedom of expression.

Broader perspective

By introducing the ‘All Inclusive’ theme for our anniversary celebrations, we hope to make our students and staff members aware of how desirable it is to make the UG as inclusive as possible. We aim for the UG to offer a broader perspective on diversity by approaching the issue from various disciplines and angles during the anniversary celebrations. Needless to say, perhaps, the UG Lustrum Office does not put policies or actions related to this theme on the agenda, but instead generates greater awareness of inclusion so as to facilitate a safe and open debate on the issue.

We will do it

Inclusion will be an important focus area in the coming years. The previously implemented programmes relating to this area will continue to run. We aim to offer a stimulating work and study environment that fosters respect for everyone’s opinions and ideas, that allows people to express those opinions and ideas and that leaves room for authenticity – yet simultaneously also allows people to feel inextricably linked to the UG community. We also aim to raise awareness of the added value of diversity in the principles of quality teaching and research that the University stands by, and to achieve a change of culture towards more inclusion. In addition, the UG is aware of its strong social ties; working and learning together with people from different backgrounds automatically follows from that and is at the heart of inclusion.
