Sijbren Otto is hoogleraar Systeemchemie. Hij bestudeert ‘chemische evolutie’. Zijn onderzoeksgroep ontwikkelde een modelsysteem met moleculen die kopieën van zichzelf kunnen maken en toonde aan dat er ook diversiteit kan ontstaan door mutatie van de replicatoren.

De chemie heeft zich tot nu toe vooral gericht op het laten ontstaan van stabiele systemen. Biologische systemen bestaan echter bij de gratie van vorming en verval, van synthese en degradatie, van een opeenvolging van leven en dood. Sijbren Otto wil onderzoeken of deze biologische principes ook toepasbaar zijn in de synthetische chemie. Zelf-assemblerende en zelf-replicerende macromoleculen spelen daarbij een belangrijke rol. Kunstmatige chemische systemen van dergelijke moleculen zouden ook een Darwiniaanse evolutie kunnen ondergaan. Een eerste stap in de richting van synthetisch leven, hoopt Otto.

Otto kreeg in 2017 een prestigieuze ERC-subsidie van 2,5 miljoen om de mogelijkheden om nieuw leven te maken in het laboratorium verder te onderzoeken. Hij wil verdere stappen zetten om de kloof tussen scheikunde en biologie te overbruggen door volledig synthetische systemen te bouwen. Deze dragen essentiële karakteristieken van het leven in zich: replicatie, metabolisme en compartimentering. Het koppelen van deze karakteristieken in een volledige synthetisch systeem is tot nog toe niet gelukt. In 2020 is Otto benoemd tot lid van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen.

In 2021 ontving Otto de James Flack Norris Award in Physical Organic Chemistry van de American Chemical Society, voor zijn leidende bijdrage aan de totstandkoming van het vakgebied van de systeemchemie. Ben Feringa (in 2007) was tot nu toe de enige Nederlander die deze prijs heeft ontvangen.

In oktober 2023 maakte de European Research Council bekend een ERC Synergy Grant toe te kennen aan Otto van 3,4 miljoen euro voor zijn project ‘MINILIFE’.
