Lubbert Dijkhuizen (1951) is hoogleraar Microbiologie. Dijkhuizen heeft aan de basis gestaan van veel onderzoek naar levensprocessen in micro-organismen en relevante (industriële) toepassingen van deze kennis. Daarbij gaat het vooral om micro-organismen en enzymen in te kunnen zetten bij biotechnologische processen, met name bij de omzetting van koolhydraten. Daarnaast verricht hij onder meer onderzoek naar tuberculose(remmers).

Dijkhuizen is initiatiefnemer en medeoprichter van het Carbohydrate Competence Centre (CCC), een publiek-private samenwerking tussen 19 bedrijven en 6 kennisinstellingen. In 24 projecten (totaal 28 miljoen euro) wordt onderzoek verricht naar koolhydraten die een belangrijke rol spelen in Nutrition and health. Over het onderzoek van het CCC en de toepassingen daarvan voor bijvoorbeeld gezonde voeding publiceerde het Dagblad van het Noorden een overzichtelijk artikel.

Dijkhuizen begeleidde meer dan 55 promovendi en is auteur van meer dan honderden internationale wetenschappelijke publicaties. Zijn onderzoek is van internationale allure en zo vruchtbaar dat hij steeds de nodige onderzoeksgelden kan verwerven. Hij heeft een open oog voor de mogelijke producten en processen waartoe zijn fundamentele onderzoek kan leiden. Dit heeft er onder meer in geresulteerd dat hij genoemd wordt als (mede)uitvinder in tientallen patenten en dat circa 75% van zijn onderzoeksgroep extern gefinancierd wordt, vooral door de industrie. Eind 2010 baarden Dijkhuizen en zijn collega Dijkstra wereldwijd opzien met een artikel in PNAS over een mogelijke oplossing tegen tandgaatjes. In 2012 werd Dijkhuizen op de Dag van de Valorisatie uitgeroepen tot een van de drie meest ondernemende wetenschappers van Nederland. In datzelfde jaar maakte het CCC van Dijkhuizen bekend dat er een doorbraak is in onderzoek naar koolhydraten, waarmee onder meer patat gezonder kan worden.

Op 11 april presenteerde het CCC op haar Open Dag de resultaten van het onderzoek naar nieuwe toepassingen voor koolhydraten.
