Bart van Wees

Bart van Wees studeerde Natuurkunde aan de TU Delft, waar hij ook promoveerde en werkte. In 1991 stapte hij over naar de RUG en negen jaar later volgde hier de benoeming tot hoogleraar van de groep Physics of Nanodevices. Hij werd in 2009 verkozen tot lid van de KNAW en in 2014 werd hij Fellow of the American Physical Society. Naast tal van andere activiteiten heeft Van Wees sinds 2013 een leidende rol in het Graphene Flagship Project van de EU. Via dit programma wordt tot 2023 maar liefst 1 miljard euro in grafeen-onderzoek geïnvesteerd.

Het onderzoek van Van Wees komt voort uit nieuwsgierigheid naar nieuwe natuurkundige verschijnselen, vooral het gedrag van elektronen in nieuwe materialen. Daarbij heeft hij altijd een half oog gericht op toepassingen. Van Wees is een internationale autoriteit op het gebied van kwantumelektronentransport. Hij heeft belangrijke bijdragen geleverd aan verschillende onderwerpen, zoals nano-elektronica, mesoscopische systemen, spintronica en (het meest recent) de spincalorimetrie.

De aanpak van Van Wees kenmerkt zich door de manier waarop hij nieuwe natuurkunde weet te bestuderen met behulp van devices (experimentele schakelingen) waarbij hij nieuwe experimentele concepten combineert met een diepgaand theoretisch begrip. Zijn bijdragen zijn essentieel voor de ontwikkeling van elektronica ‘voorbij Moore’ (d.w.z. nieuwe concepten die moeten helpen transistoren en anders componenten veel kleiner en efficiënter te maken), zoals nanoelektronica en spintronica in nieuwe (vaak tweedimensionale) materialen en schakelingen.

In 2016 werd Van Wees voor zijn werk onderscheiden met de hoogste wetenschappelijke onderscheiding in Nederland: de Spinozapremie. De Spinozapremie geeft Bart van Wees de kans om verder te pionieren. Want naast de eer krijgt hij 2,5 miljoen euro, vrij te besteden aan zijn onderzoek.
