The logo consists of the coat of arms, the slash and the name ‘rijksuniversiteit groningen/university of groningen’. Using only lower-case letters in the University’s name was a deliberate choice and results in an even and austere lettering. The slash links the coat of arms with the lettering; as a formal element, it is derived from the coat of arms. The combination of the slash and the lettering give a youthful image to the rich academic tradition of the University of Groningen, which is symbolized by the coat of arms. These three elements form a unified whole and must be used as such. Among other things, this means they must be scaled in proportion. The position and size of each element in the logo are fixed and may not be changed in isolation. Only the appropriate colours (‘RUG red’, black and white) may be used in the logo.
