Academia develops at the interface of different fields. This is one reason why the University of Groningen is home to a wide range of fields, each with a great number of subject specialists. The overview below, which is based on a standard categorization of fields, will help you find the right expert for each field. If you cannot find the expert you are looking for in this list, try searching via a related field or faculty; you may find him or her there.

I am intrigued by the possibilities for learning and development that engaging in joint action can offer, which I study from a dynamical systems perspective. I investigate the process of discovering possibilities for action (affordances) within a social system, by integrating theory and methodology from movement sciences and psychology in embodied naturalistic tasks.

Doctoral Researcher
My main research interests include the psychological foundations of gender relations and inequality. I approach these topics with a combination of ideas from social, cultural, and evolutionary psychology, using quantitative and qualitative research methods (e.g. lab experiments, vignette studies, surveys, observations, interviews).

My research is directed to finding new ways of increasing gender equality and women's empowerment by offering researchers and the general public a more nuanced understanding of why sexism, gender-based violence, and other (both explicit and implicit) discriminatory gender beliefs persist.

I enjoy collaborating on research that brings evolutionary psychology perspectives to existing research questions in social psychology around gender relations and sexism.

BA/MA students interested in conducting research on these topics, and those seeking international research experience are welcome to contact me.

My main current research interest is the study of social class, and educational background in particular. Combining sociological and social psychological approaches, we are using a social identity framework to understand the effect of education on social and political attitudes. I found that the higher educated are much less tolerant than previously thought and that the less educated have severe problems in creating a positive social identity around their level of education and their position in society. I am also studying the attitudes of higher educated people towards less educated people.

Field / Discipline
Gemma López Canicio is Research Fellow in European Culture and Literature at the University of Groningen. Her expertise is in narrative research, emphasizing artistic-narrative communication (literature and cinema), fiction, story-telling, and representation from a cognitive sciences and interactive narrative research (videogames) perspective. Currently, she is interested in integrating my narrative research and neuro-cognition research expertise with new interdisciplinary methods and resources valuable to face contemporary social challenges with an international scope.

She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish: Language and Literatures from the University of Alicante and a Master's Degree in Art, Literature and Culture from the Autonomous University of Madrid. In 2016, she was awarded a Collaboration Grant by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport to conduct a study about the limits of fiction in literature. She obtained her PhD in Art, Literature and Culture in 2020 from the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain) (Cum Laude Distinction and International Mention). Her research was funded from 2017 to 2020 with a research grant provided by the José Luis de Oriol-Catalina de Urquijo Foundation. Gemma carries out multidisciplinary research in Humanities, Literary Theory, Cognitive Sciences, and Communication.

In addition, she is a member of the Communication [Poetics and Rhetoric] Research Group (C [P y R]) and a foundational member of the Spanish Society of Rhetoric [Se-Ret].

My reseach focuses on personalizing treatment based on symptoms, rather than diagnoses. To this end, I am interested in the methodological and statistical approaches, such as machine learning, Bayesian statistics and psychometrics.
