D&I Office publishes Inclusive Language Style Guide
The University of Groningen Diversity & Inclusion Office has published an Inclusive Language Style Guide (see the most recent version in our list of resources). The aim of the guide is to address new developments in language, to encourage and support UG staff members and students to incorporate inclusive language into their daily communications, teaching, and work. The style guide focuses mainly on using inclusive language in English, with a small section about the Dutch context.
The style guide covers the following topics: gender-aware language use; language surrounding ability, disability, and neurodivergence; language surrounding background, nationality, migration, and ethnicity; inclusive language use in academic texts; inclusive language use in HR and communications; and a brief outline of the Dutch context, including pronoun usage and ‘false friends’. A glossary of terms and definitions as well as further resources can be found at the end of the style guide.
The style guide is a ‘living document’, which means that any additions, comments, or corrections are welcome. If you would like to get in touch about the style guide, please email the D&I Office at diversity rug.nl.
