The RMT Project is One of the ENLIGHT 2025 Call Winners!

29 January 2026

We are excited to announce that the RMT Project, with a team from the UG in participation, has been selected as one of the 2025 ENLIGHT Call winners! This project aims to develop a framework that will future-proof the MSc thesis (or comparable end work). Find out more about RMT and the people behind it below!

What is the main goal of the project? Who are your collaborative partners?

We aim to develop a framework that will future proof the MSc thesis (or comparable end work) of our institutions. Here, we work together with our international project partners, and we consult and involve our colleagues to develop a new or updated approach towards the end-phase of our academic education.

What inspired this project idea?

Developments in the domain of GenAI create both challenges and opportunities for student-led research projects and call for an evaluation of the master’s thesis or end-work. As GenAI tools increasingly support or automate core aspects of writing, more specifically, the execution of research and reporting on research outcomes, universities have to rethink the design, supervision, and assessment of the end-work of their education. In addition, study programs must equip graduates with the ability to contribute meaningfully and to innovate. The end phase of the study can serve as a unique opportunity to connect students with external stakeholders, to apply and co-create knowledge, and to actively contribute to the solution of real-life challenges.

Why is this international collaboration essential to your work?

The desire for a challenging and academically meaningful final project is not unique to a specific institution. By collaborating with international partners, we ensure a broader perspective and avoid relying solely on local approaches.

How did the collaboration come together?

Prior to this project, we collaborated with one of our current partners. During this collaboration, we identified a strong alignment in our interests and challenges, which highlighted the value of working together on our shared topic. The Enlight grant has since provided the necessary resources to deepen this partnership and further expand our network of collaborators.

This project will tackle one of the most pressing challenges in higher education today: ensuring the quality of student capstone projects in the era of GenAI. We anticipate that our work will offer both the University of Groningen and our ENLIGHT partners valuable insights and actionable guidance for designing resilient, future-proof academic assessments.

Does your project connect to other research, teaching or outreach activities you are involved in?

The project connects with our teaching activities, as all of us are involved in the final phases of our students education. In addition, we explore opportunities to collaborate with external organizations, and businesses where feasible.

What's next?

Once this project is completed, we might want to invest in further collaborations. Here, we could develop updated curricula and novel teaching approaches; where GenAI can be integrated in without losing the core value of our programs: developing independent critical thinkers.
