Council Speech on the AI Platform
Our University is facing many challenges and, despite that, is striving to push the frontier and dare to go where many others are struggling, pushing strongly for data sovereignty and independence from Big Tech. It is clear that this will take time and effort, but in the grand scheme of things, it is also important that we try to retain as much as possible our data and sensitive information local to our institution.
There is a strong hope that automation and robotisation of processes will help us simplify our lives and slim our bureaucracy. It is hard to know to which extent this is possible, but I think we have at least to try. And in this context, I commend that we want to make sure to do this internally, using existing local expertise and growing the expertise we lack. This plan is going to be a necessary part of this effort and will allow us to develop the necessary technical infrastructure to run open LLMs locally and in isolation, experimenting with the possibilities this can open without giving up our privacy, and have a single point of entry for commercial APIs that align with our privacy requirements.
I have already voiced during the committee meeting my worries, especially the fact that the increasing scarcity of powerful hardware and the growing costs will pose a huge challenge for the budgeted expenses and make it hard to maintain the cost of our solutions competitive. However, I am confident that we can find a way to optimise for cost-effectiveness and quality, especially if we make use of the specialised knowledge already at our disposal in our faculties.
I have also already voiced during the committee meeting my appreciation for the process that was followed, involving from its start the council and multiple staff members, with various rounds of feedback, where our criticisms were taken in a constructive way. I think it shows that we can work together productively and constructively.
In both this project and the Smart Building 2.0, I saw an active effort to make use of the expertise already present in our faculties, which I think will help strengthen the relationship between services and faculties. And especially for this project, I want to stress again the importance of involving the AI Council early and continuously in the development of this project and benefiting from their network and expertise.
The science faction consents to this proposal and wishes good luck to all the people involved!
