Moniek Tromp joins the Netherlands Academy of Engineering

Prof. Moniek Tromp has been selected as one of twenty new members of The Netherlands Academy of Engineering (NAE). The NAE is a select group of engineers, technologists and innovators from science and industry who have delivered outstanding achievements, play a pioneering role in social transitions and are committed to strengthening the role of engineering in our society.
Tromp is Professor of Materials Chemistry at the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Through her research, Tromp aims to gain insight into the functioning of functional materials. These are materials such as batteries, solar cells and catalysts, which are important for making society more sustainable.
To achieve this, Tromp and her team recently received a €15.8 million grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to establish a new national research centre. The centre will enable materials to be studied at atomic scale using X-rays, thereby developing sustainable solutions for a circular society that runs on renewable energy. Until now, the Netherlands lacked an integrated infrastructure for laboratory-based X-ray characterisation, a crucial link for fundamental and applied materials research.
