HySUCCESS Project Leader Appointed Lead Author in Next IPCC Assessment Report

We are proud to share that Professor Linda Steg, coordinator of the HySUCCESS project, has been selected as a Lead Author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). She will contribute to Working Group III on Mitigation of Climate Change, specifically Chapter 5: Enablers and Barriers to Mitigation.
This appointment highlights Professor Steg’s internationally recognized expertise in understanding the social and behavioral dimensions of climate action. Her work for AR7 will focus on a wide range of factors that influence the feasibility of climate mitigation, including:
-
Technological, institutional, economic, and human capacity for mitigation.
-
Access to technology, infrastructure, finance, investment, and governance.
-
The role of inequality, equity, labor, and just transition.
-
Social dimensions such as public perception, behavior, lifestyles, engagement, and wellbeing.
-
Environmental and natural resource enablers and barriers.
-
Political economy, indigenous rights, and international cooperation.
Hydrogen is a relevant mitigation option, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors. The connection between the IPCC’s framework and HySUCCESS is clear: our project builds directly on the IPCC feasibility framework, which evaluates the technical, economic, institutional, social, and environmental dimensions of energy transitions. Chapter 5 of AR7 will expand on this framework, making the appointment of Professor Steg especially relevant for HySUCCESS.
This recognition not only underscores the importance of the HySUCCESS approach but also ensures that insights from our project can feed into the assessment the feasibility of mitigation pathways.
"Being part of AR7 is an exciting opportunity to bring together cutting-edge research on barriers and enablers of mitigation opttions," says Professor Steg. "The HySUCCESS project provides relevant insights into the feasibility of hydrogen solutions, which align closely with the questions addressed in Chapter 5."
The HySUCCESS consortium congratulates Professor Steg on this prestigious role and looks forward to contributing to the global dialogue on achieving a just and feasible energy transition.
