I studied Biology at the University of Utrecht (1984-1988), with focus on plant physiology and molecular genetics.
After my PhD at the department of Theoretical Production Ecology of the Wageningen Agricultural University with as title: "Quantification of the energy costs of maintenance and transport processes in field crops". The research was a joint project with the AB-DLO and the University of Utrecht.
I then worked for 2.5 years as post-doc with Prof. D.M. Eissenstat at the Department of Horticulture of the Pennsylvania State University, USA.
In 1997, I started working on coastal ecosystems at Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-CEME), which in 2012 became part of the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). While working at NIOZ, I have had part-time appointments Deltares and the HZ-Vlissingen.
In 2014, I was appointed Honorary Professor Biogeomorphological Dynamics and EcosystemServices of Coastal Zones at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences University of Groningen.
