Field/Discipline
Expertise
Main research theme is the epidemiology, prevention and treatment of Mood and Anxiety Disorders, mostly focusing on depression as a centra theme . My aim is to develop new interventions and clinical applications based on a better understanding of what goes wrong in depression, both on a psychological and a neurobiological level. My research covers both in large patient cohorts such as the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) and population studies such as LIFELINES and TRAILS, in combination with clinical trials. Pathophysiological mechanisms of interest include neuroinflammation and chronobiology, in which we have a number of PhD trajectories. Current trials include oral ketamine and psilocybin for Treatment Resistant Depression, anti-inflammatory drugs for depression, studies with Ecological Momentary Asessment and applications for self management developed together with patients (https://ilab-psychiatry.nl/en_US/).
As a clinician and a teacher I see patients with Treatment Resistant Depression in our Tertiairy Mood Disorders program.
