Field/Discipline
Expertise
My main research theme is the epidemiology, prevention and treatment of Mood and Anxiety Disorders, with depression as a central theme . My aim is to develop more effective interventions based on a better understanding of what goes wrong in depression, both on psychological/social and neurobiological level. For this, I work in patient cohorts such as the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), population studies such as LIFELINES and TRAILS, the psychiatry iLab focusing on individual symptom profiles and self management, and perform pilot studies and larger clinical trials. Pathophysiological mechanisms of interest include neuroinflammation and chronobiology, but I have become more and more interested in the therapeutic potential of novel (or not so novel) psychoplastic compounds such as ketamine and psilocybin for patients with hard to treat depression and other severe mental illnesses. As a clinician and supervisor I work in our Academic Mood Disorders program.
