Expertise
My aim as a clinical researcher is to develop more effective interventions at different stages of the development of Mood and Anxiety Disorders, ranging from prevention projects in the population to novel interventions in tertiary care. With a background in clinical psychiatry and epidemiology, I learned a lot by studying patient cohorts such as the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) and community studies such as LIFELINES and TRAILS. Pathophysiological mechanisms of interest include neuroinflammation and chronobiology, with clinical trials examining the added value of personalized treatment strategies above regular guideline based treatments. Since 2015 I became interested in the potential of psychedelics to treat patients with severe, hard to treat psychiatric illnesses and I now lead the EU Horizon PsyPal project as well as the Marie Curie Doctoral Network ‘Integrate’. Together with a wide range of professionals and institutions we founded the regional Mentaal Gezond Groningen project to invest in large scale prevention of mental disorders. My research is embedded in the University Center for Psychiatry at the University Medical Center Groningen.
