Expertise

Our core expertise is in the development and use of advanced methods of NMR spectroscopy to solid and semi-solid samples. We use solid-state NMR to dissect chemical compositions, analyze chemical modifications and to study mechanisms of chemical and biochemical processes. A key focus is on samples that are not just rigid and 'dry', but rather hydrated - where we develop ways to use ssNMR to detect molecular motion, solvent interactions, chemical and structural transitions.

In a biological context we use ssNMR (along with other biochemical experiments) to probe mechanisms of human disease. One focus is on protein misfolding and aggregation in Huntington's disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. Moreover, we have a strong interest in the behavior of lipid membranes and how they are modulated by protein/peptide interactions. We also study the structure-function relationship of functional materials, with a focus on bio-materials and bio-mimetic materials, such as responsive hydrogels and functionalized nanomaterials.
