Keys to the Stars
Composer Urmas Sisask is writing a new piece for 4-hand piano and dedicates it to the Groningen Grieg Piano duo and astronomer Peter Barthel. Sisask composes this new work especially for the upcoming international Year of Astronomics 2009.
This new composition, as well as other pieces of Sisask, will be played by the Grieg Piano duo. The music will be accompanied by images of the universe, in particular of cosmic objects that embody the sounds. The world premier of the new work is scheduled for the summer of 2009.
Composer Sisask, who is a choir and orchestra conductor as well, is frequently inspired by the cosmos. His music is characterized by a great sense of symbolism. What is striking is that in addition to pieces made for singing and choirs, instrumental and orchestra works are amply represented within his 91 published Opus songs. With this repetoire Sisask has formed a composing trend that is uniquely his own, and which has become known as 'astromusic.'
The Grieg Piano duo is formed by pianists Elles van der Heiden and Siebert Nix. After finishing their training at the Groningen Conservatory (1986), the duo quickly made a good name for themselves in the world of chamber music with dynamic and sanguineous four hand pianoplay on one piano.
