International Open Access week
|Datum:||14 oktober 2019|
The world is getting evermore connected every day. Everyone is being used to having access to the latest news and up-to-date datasets. The week from 21 to 27 October 2019 is the International Open Access week. The week is centered around the question “Open for whom?”.
During this week, several activities are organized within the city of Groningen. The Geodienst is offering a few freely accessible workshops and a bring-your-own-lunch-seminar during this week.
Open Science with Story Maps
An Esri Story Map is an intuitive website where pictures, videos, text and interactive maps can be put together easily to transfer a message to your audience. During the International Open Access week we twice offer a workshop where you learn the basics of the Story Map. You will learn to create an interactive map and build a Story Map around that. The data that is published through a Story Map is published on our ArcGIS Online platform and can be made accessible for your fellow researchers, within the University of Groningen or the whole world. Check out more about the workshop here.
Open Dutch geodata
Almost all of the different levels of government in the Netherlands provide some sort of open geographical data. The different national government and national data providers have their own data portal, various municipalities also have their own portal. The data you need for your research might be available at different locations so a bit of experience with data portals might come in handy. During the International Open Access week we offer on tuesday 22nd of October a crash course in open Dutch geodata. We have two options: (1) a lunch seminar: a lecture during which a few large open datasets and their possibilities will be explained and (2) a workshop during which you will get a bigger picture of the available datasets and will be able to have a hands-on experience with one or more of these datasets. We recommend the lunch seminar for a brief overview and the workshop for a more in-depth view of the datasets. Check out the websites for enrollment for and more information about the lunch seminar and the workshops.
The Geodienst is not the only one to organize activities around the International Open Access week:
- The Open Science Community Groningen organizes their Kick-off event
- The University of Groningen Library organizes a symposium on open science research practices
