100th Dataset published in DataverseNL

30 June 2020

Recently Xinkai Qiu and his colleagues of the research group of Professor R.C. Ryan Chiechi published the 100th dataset affiliated to the University of Groningen in DataverseNL. This datasets relates to their recent publication on Heart for open data: Ryan Chiechi received a vegan homemade heart cake

Heart for OPEN DATA

DataverseNL is all about online storage, sharing and registration of research data. Descriptions of the data, including scripts, can be made openly available and the data can be shared in several ways from restricted to Open Access, depending on its sensitivity. DataverseNL is a shared service provided by participating institutions, a.o. the University of Groningen, and DANS. As such the university can efficiently use the metadata, which is often not the case with data services provided by publishers. Descriptions of datasets in DataverseNL are copied into the research database of the university so links with other research output and activities are easily made, increasing findability and usability. For those who participate in the Open Science Framework, a connection with DataverseNL can be set up.

DataverseNL uses the Dataverse software developed by Harvard University, which is used worldwide. A factsheet about DataverseNL is also available. It is one of the recommended platforms to enhance the visibility and impact of your research data.

The institute with the most datasets published via this platform is GELIFES. Local Data Manager Joke Bakker received a box of chocolates to celebrate the occasion. Joke stresses the importance of the platform that offers to inform about research data while at same time keeping researchers in control of access and use if necessary. “Moderating both archiving and publishing processes and access to the content are important and often overlooked tasks”, says Joke. Datamanagers and datastewards do this far more often than researchers and can build and share expertise.

The UMCG and the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences is at its heels, with the UMCG as runners up. Canan Çakirlar, Esther Scheele and Youri van den Hurk (Groningen Institute of Archaeology) are the researchers behind the most downloaded (500 times) dataset. This dataset includes the complete information on the vertebrate skeletons present in the Zooarchaeological Collections of the Groningen Institute of Archaeology
