Description of the course

The purpose of this course is to gain knowledge in materials and production techniques. A considerable number of materials will be discussed. Archaeological materials can only be recognized if thorough knowledge of their deterioration processes in buried circumstances is available. Besides deterioration processes attention will be given to (passive) conservation of excavated materials. We will deal with (a) the manufacture of ceramics, glass, copper, sculpture, etcetera, (b) passive and active conservation techniques, (c) knowledge of materials used in ancient times and materials used during conservation treatment, (d) archaeometrical methods of analysis.

Remark

Conservation en Material Studies I can be extended with 5 points (Conservation en Material Studies II; among other things laboratory work), examined by a paper. Besides there is the possibility of an internship in a conservation laboratory.
