Mass Spectrometry Course 2026

Mass Spectrometry Course 2026

February 3-5, 2026 • Groningen

Venue: Anda Kerkhoven Center (3227) & ERIBA building (3226), A Deusinglaan 1, Groningen

This three-day course offers a comprehensive introduction to mass spectrometry, with a strong focus on real-world applications in proteomics, biochemistry, glycosciences and beyond.

The course is intended for anyone who needs or uses mass spectrometry now or in the near future, with a particular emphasis on PhD students. Importantly, no previous knowledge of mass spectrometry is required, making it an accessible entry point for newcomers, while still providing depth for experienced users.

Over three days, participants will explore:

• Core principles: General introduction to mass spectrometry, resolution, isotopes, mass analyzers, and ionization techniques.

• Analytical workflows: LC-MS and tandem MS (MS/MS).

• Proteins & peptides: Fundamentals of peptide/protein identification & quantification.

• Emerging fields: Introduction to metabolomics, MS imaging, single-cell and spatial omics, and MS-based Omics data analysis.

• Glycobiology applications: Introduction to glycomics & glycoproteomics.

• Practical insights: Mass spectrometry in Groningen — practical aspects and guidelines for use of the Interfaculty MS Center.

By joining, you will also benefit from:

• Facility tours offering hands-on perspectives.

• Networking opportunities with peers, experts, and international participants, including Erasmus exchange students.

• Advance materials: All participants who register by e-mail will receive electronic handouts and links to online sessions ahead of time.

By the end of the course, you will be able to confidently understand and apply MS-based techniques in your research, while building valuable connections across the RUG, UMCG, and beyond.

Registration fee: € 80 (RUG/UMCG students, PhD candidates, technicians and scientists)

To register, email Hjalmar Permentier at h.p.permentier@rug.nl, and provide a project code.
