Step 1: inform yourself about the programme
Make sure to inform yourself thoroughly about your study choice. If you would like to get more information about the LLB programme International and European Law, please check
-
one of the UG Open Days (3 times per year)
For Dutch-speaking students we would highly recommend that you also read this page, since the English-taught LLB programme does not give access to the bar or judiciary (the so-called civiel effect).
Step 2: check your admissibility
Please check your admissibility to the LLB programme. Of course, we understand that you possibly have not completed your pre-university education yet before the application deadline or before the matching activity.
You are admissible when you have one of the following degrees:
-
a Dutch VWO diploma (any profile)
-
a fully completed HBO first year in International and European Law at The Hague University of Applied Science
-
a fully completely first year from a Dutch research university
-
foreign diplomas which are similar to the VWO diploma
Please make sure to check our webpage for the specific programme admission requirements, especially with regard to the English proficiency requirements.
Step 3: gain in-depth knowledge of the programme
If you are admissible, you can gain more in-depth knowledge of the programme. You can for example do so by participating in the web class International and European Law, which is offered twice per year.
Should you have questions about the programme that the programme pages do not provide for, please feel free to contact the Faculty's International Office through LLB rug.nl.
Step 4: apply in Studielink
The application procedure only starts for real when you apply for the programme in Studielink. You choose the following details in Studielink:
-
start per September 2026
-
at the University of Groningen
-
in year 1 of the bachelor
-
International and European Law
Deadline
All documents need to be uploaded before 1 May. After 1 May your admission right to our programme expires.
Missed the deadline?
The University cannot process your application any more and you are therefore not admissible to the first year of the LLB programme International and European Law for the academic year 2026/27.
Exceptions
Only in the situations below an application between 1 May and 1 August is permitted. In all these situations a deadline of 1 August applies:
-
you receive a negative Binding Study Advice (BSA) for your current degree programme
-
you applied for a different bachelor's degree programme in Studielink before 1 May, but after joining the matching activity, you have changed your mind and prefer the LLB International and European Law.
If you are of the opinion that one of these two situations apply to you, please contact the Faculty a.s.a.p. by emailing to matching.llb rug.nl. Please indicate clearly which of the two exceptions mentioned above apply to you, write a strong motivation and add the documentation to prove the situation.
Registered after 1 August?
Your application will not be taken into consideration, even if one of the exceptions mentioned above applies. This means you are not admissible from that point onward for the LLB programme International and European Law for the academic year 2026/27.
Step 5: upload your documents
Students holding a non-Dutch degree
If you have a non-Dutch pre-university degree, you will have to upload your application documents in Progress Portal, our online application system.
You can find more information on how to complete these steps here, more particularly under step 1 (apply).
A list of documents to be uploaded in Progress Portal is to be found on our programme pages.
Students holding a Dutch degree
If you hold a VWO degree, you are directly admissible and will not have to upload any documents.
If you have a Dutch hbo-propedeuse International and European Law from The Hague, you have to upload your documents. in this application form.
For Dutch-speaking students it is however important to check the difference in content between the Dutch-taught track 'Internationaal en Europees Recht' (part of the bachelor 'Rechtsgeleerdheid') and the English-taught programme International and European Law, in order to make an informed decision regarding the programme chosen. More information is available here.
Deadline
The deadline to upload your documents, for both groups, is also 1 May.
Step 6: complete your matching
You will have to join the compulsory matching activity if you want to participate in the LLB programme International and European Law. The matching activity is compulsory.
Aim
The aim of the matching is to give you a very clear idea of what the programme is about with regard to the educational formats used in the programme, the amount of reading, the level of assessment, and (part of) the content of the programme.
Online
The matching activity is conducted online and consists of four lectures, some reading and four online assessments. It will take a maximum of six hours to complete.
When?
The online matching activity will be offered three times:
-
end of January: 21 January - 28 January 2026
-
end of March: 18 - 25 March 2026
-
end of May/early June: 27 May - 3 June 2026
How?
The online matching activity will be available for one week. You can decide yourself at what point during the week you will participate. You can do all four parts in one go or take each part at a different time. As long as you have completed all four assessments at the end of the week. You can only join if you have applied for the LLB programme in Studielink.
Preparation and instructions
You do not have to preppare anything in advance for the online matching activity. All necessary information to be able to complete your online matching activity will be available in the online matching activity.
You will receive instructions on how to enter the online matching activity in the week leading up to the online matching class. Please do also check your spambox.
Not participated or not completed all four assessments?
If you do not participate in the online matching activity or if you do not finish all four assessments, your registratrion as a student in the LLB programme International and European Law will be blocked for the academic year 2026/27.
Exemption possibilities
You can apply for an exemption when:
-
you have successfully completed the matching activity for the LLB International and European Law of the University of Groningen after September 2024
-
you have successfully completed the web class for the LLB International and European Law after September 2024
-
you have been previously registered as a student of the LLB International and European Law at the University of Groningen
You need to apply for an exemption before the last online matching activity. Therefore, the deadline is 15 May. You can request an exemption through matching.llb rug.nl.
Exemptions based on other grounds are not granted.
Step 7: arrange for your tuition fee payment
Please make sure to pay your tuition fee before 31 August! Also check if the matching advice has been registered properly. If you have not paid your fees in time, you cannot be registered as a student of the LLB programme International and European Law and your enrolments for both courses and exams become invalid.
If you have any questions about your application or registration as a student of the University of Groningen, your student card (and passport photograph) and about the payment of your tuition fee, please contact the University's Student Information and Administration (SIA). Your Faculty or programme unfortunately cannot help you with these matters.
Step 8: prepare the start of your programme properly
Wew ill provide you with a new step-by-step by the end of June. This step-by-step holds all information on how to start our programme well, including information about your schedule for both classes and exams, ordering books and readers, the digital systems you will be using for your programme, programme information, wifi on campus, etcetera.
You will then also receive more detailed information about the Faculty introduction and induction sessions (see step 9).
Do you already want to prepare for student life in Groningen? Feel free to check the GroningenLife website! You can find a lot of information on these pages about living, studying and working, events and much more.
Step 9: participate in the Faculty introduction and induction sessions
The Faculty organises a plenary introduction session for all new students of the English-taught programmes on 26 August.
In addition, induction sessions are offered for all separate working groups of the LLB programme, which will take place on 27 and 28 August.
Participation in both the introduction and induction session is compulsory. Both sessions will provide you with a lot of important information, which will allow you to start your programme in a good manner.
