Bachelor of Law (shortened programme)

Röling Building

Are you enrolled in the International and European Law bachelor’s programme and interested in obtaining 'civiel effect' (qualification for legal professions in the Netherlands)? Then you can follow the shortened Bachelor’s in Law (specialization: International and European Law).

Why choose this programme?

The International and European Law bachelor does not include Dutch law courses, which means it does not lead to civiel effect. This shortened bachelor allows you to complete the required Dutch law components. Important: You only obtain civiel effect after completing a Dutch law master’s degree as well.

Who is this for?

  • Primarily for students in the International and European Law track
  • Students in the Technology Law track can also apply, but they must complete 20 additional ECTS from the I&E Law track (total workload: 120–125 ECTS)

Admission requirements

You are eligible if you:

  • have completed all first-year courses of the English-taught bachelor
  • can demonstrate Dutch language proficiency at C1 level (e.g. VWO diploma or NT2 certificate)

For questions about admission, please contact the Admissions Board: toelating-rechten rug.nl.

What will you study?

  • 100–105 ECTS from the regular Law bachelor (specialization International and European Law).
  • Focus on Dutch law courses
  • Participation in the Student Court (Studentenrechtbank) for practical experience

If you have taken a course similar to Introduction to Common Law, you may receive an exemption (5 ECTS)

The complete and current programme can be found in Ocasys as from the end of July each year. For questions about the programme and/or for a proper planning, please contact the study advisers: studieadvies-rechten rug.nl.

Student Court

You can participate in the Student Court if you:

  • have completed all first-year courses by mid-August, and
  • have obtained at least 60 ECTS from years 2 and 3, including:
    • Introduction
    • Civil Law 1
    • Constitutional Law 1
    • Criminal Law 1
