Do you recall how you went about choosing your profession and the obstacles that you encountered? A single conversation can sometimes be very enlightening and can make a world of difference.

Do you recall how you went about choosing your profession and the obstacles that you encountered? A single conversation can sometimes be very enlightening and can make a world of difference.

Many students would benefit from information about the job market during their degree programme, and a discussion with a practitioner: an experienced professional who can tell them what the day-to-day work of a lawyer involves. Not all students have access to someone who can give them this information.

Do you enjoy acting as a mentor? Would you like to supervise/coach one or more of our students with their career questions and perhaps allow them access to your own network? If so, please contact José van der Veen, professional field policy officer and chair of the alumni committee.

What is expected of you?

As a mentor, you will be expected to listen to the student’s career questions and answer them to the best of your ability based on your own experiences.

  • You will be an informal discussion partner when it comes to career questions, ambitions and development.
  • You will be a source of information about everyday professional practice, such as what your day-to-day work looks like, the culture of your organization.
  • You will provide information about the competences needed to do your job in your organization and you will explain, for example, what people look out for in job applications.
  • You will help a student to think about what they can do alongside or during their studies in order to raise their profile.
  • You will be able to offer opportunities for work experience (a placement) within your organization or an exploratory placement (snuffelstage) of one day a week.
  • You will be able to provide access to your own network.
  • You will be able to tell your own story.

You will decide how much time you wish to devote to the mentorship and the kind of contact that you will have with the student.
