Construction project next to Heymansgebouw (Faculty BSS) finished

02 June 2020

After a year-long construction project, the new building as part of the Heymansvleugel on the Grote Kruisstraat was completed as planned on Friday 29 May 2020 by contracting company Hegeman from Nijverdal. In the coming period, the rooms will be furnished and the UG’s Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences (GMW) will be set up with more and better-equipped study stations, a revamped restaurant and improved teaching facilities.

The old extension to the Heymans wing, built in 1966, was demolished in the summer of 2018, after which the construction project of the new building started in April 2019. The design was created by architectural firm AAS Groningen, in consultation with students and staff members, and fits in perfectly with the existing support frame for the wing. The striking window design and the bay windows jutting out into the garden give the building an open appearance. The new building section is two storeys high, has a floor space of 1,800 square metres and is more sustainable due to improved insulation, ventilation and climate control.

In the coming period, the building will be further equipped by furnishing company Gispen, who were awarded this project after winning a mini contest.
