Master Ambassador Art History
Barber van der Laan

Hello! My name is Barber van der Laan. I am 23 years old and have been studying at the University of Groningen for four years. I completed the Bachelor degree in Art History last May, after which I started the corresponding Master in September. I chose this track as I felt I wanted to learn even more about my field than I already had in the three years before. The curatorial track especially sparked my interest. On top of that, I’ve felt so at home at this university that I wasn’t quite ready to leave yet!

If I had to summarize the Art Historical Master program in only three words, I would call it broadening, inspiring and interesting – and would therefore recommend it to anyone interested in art history! The program challenges you to develop your own critical opinion on topics in the art historical discourse, thereby broadening your perspective. The courses are incredibly interesting and very diverse. Whether you wish to specialize in contemporary art, early modern art, or focus on a future career as a curator – this program offers you tools to pursue your preferred track! You can construct your own schedule by picking courses that fit your personal interests. For example, I chose to follow an Early Modern course on the Italian Renaissance, as well as a curatorial course that revolves around the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum in Rotterdam. In the second semester, there is room for an internship if you like. With a total of three courses each semester and only 10 hours of classes each week, the master track requires quite some self-study.

If you have any questions regarding the content of the program, my own experiences with the master track, or perhaps even the possibility to join the program for a day, feel free to contact me!
