Degree programmes in IRIO

The Department of IRIO

IRIO focuses on all aspects of international relations. There is a particular emphasis on the process and institutionalization of international organization. The unique, integrated approach of the degree programmes dovetails with the international traditions of the field and of renowned institutes at home and abroad. The degree programmes are characterized by linking academic knowledge and practical skills in the fields of history, politics, economics and law. Students are trained to look beyond one single specialization and combine insights from various fields of study. Much attention is paid to research skills, theory, methodologies, historical context and language training.

The programme focuses on international relations, in particular on the function and the role of international organizations and the process leading to their creation.

The IRIO degree programmes are set up according to the Bachelor/Master model. The Bachelor’s degree is a three-year programme, after which students can choose to continue in a specialized one or two-year Master’s degree programme. After completing their programme, students are awarded the title of Bachelor of Arts (BA) or the title Master of Arts (MA). The programmes are offered jointly by the faculties of Arts, Law and Economics. The IRIO department within the Faculty of Arts is the main organizing body. Both BA and MA programmes are offered in English and are open to students from abroad. Information about application and admission is available on the websites of these programmes.

In the IRIO programme, students have the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills in an actual working environment by doing a career-oriented placement as part of their curriculum.
