Student activities
Students in the Faculty of Arts organize themselves and initiate various activities. Some make yearbooks and journals, others also have a social character and organize informal gatherings.
ASCI is a study association for the students of Information Science at the University of Groningen. ACSI’s main aim is to represent the interests of its members and to stimulate contact between the students, companies and the faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen. In this way, ACSI organizes a vast array of activities such as socials and trips.
Bachur is the study association for all archaeology students of the University of Groningen. Next to offering various leisure activities, Bachur’s goal is to expand archaeology students’ network in order for students to find out where they would like to work. In this way, Bachur organizes various activities such as field trips and socials.
Boreas is the study association of the bachelor Greek and Latin Language and Culture and the associated master programs in Groningen. Boréas organizes several annual events for its members including an introduction camp and a Christmas dinner. Besides leisure activities, Boréas also organizes study related activities such as lectures and excursions.
Clio is the study association of International Relations & International Organization at the University of Groningen. The objective of Clio is to combine academic development and social activities to stimulate integration between students and between students and professors. Besides that, Clio wants to represent the students IRIO. To fulfill these objectives, Clio organizes a vast array of activities ranging from an annual conference to socials and parties.
Commotie is the study association for all communication students in Groningen.They offer their members a wide range of both educational and social activities and want their members to get the most out of their student life. In-house days, workshops, lectures and congresses give a broad insight in the workfield and career possibilities of communication. Social activities contain an annual trip abroad, monthly socials, parties and many other fun activities. These activities give members the opportunity to make new friends and meet new people. E Pluribus Unum (EPU) is the study association for students who study American Studies. EPU’s main goal is to unite all American Studies students, both from the Bachelor and Master programs. By doing so, the study association can represent the entire student body in their interests, and provide them with ample opportunities to expand those interests. EPU organizes a vast array of activities, ranging from monthly (themed) drinks to study trips abroad.
Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is one of the biggest interdisciplinary student associations in Europe, founded in 1989 for supporting and developing student exchange.
ESN works for the creation of a more mobile and flexible education environment by supporting and developing the student exchange from different levels and providing an intercultural experience also to those students who cannot access a period abroad (“internationalization at home”)
ESN Groningen is a foundation, which means that they are a non-profit organization. ESN Groningen does not have members, which means that everybody can join their activities. Just sign up at their office!
Esperia is the study association for the students following the programme European Languages and Cultures at the University of Groningen. The aim of Esperia is to combine academic activities which will help the students with their studies, with social activities that connect all the students in the association. To realize this goal, Esperia frequently collaborates with other organizations in Groningen in order to provide a vast array of activities to its members. Activities organized by Esperia include socials, company visits, pub lectures, yoga sessions and an annual trip abroad.
GHD Ubbo Emmius is the study association of the History department at the University of Groningen. GHD Ubbo Emmius is an association in which leisure activities and professional events are combined. It has many committees focusing on this wide range of activities, among these is a career committee that advises and informs its members in the field of study, internships and professions. This committee has organized multiple trips, such as to The Hague and to the European Parliament in Brussels, and also lets its members find out what career path suits them best by workshops from career coaches.
IK is the study association of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Groningen. IK organizes various study-related activities and aims to create an atmosphere in which students can study successfully. Activities organized by IK include an introduction camp, a careers week and a trip abroad.
Max L. Snijders is a study association for students and former students of the master in Journalism at the University of Groningen. The main aim of Max L. Snijders is to enhance the already close ties between students during their study, which is realized by organizing lectures, monthly socials and excursions. These activities also provide members the opportunity to meet senior students and alumni.
Meander is the study association of Arts and Architectural History at the University of Groningen. The aim of this study association is to unite its members and to offer additional activities in which both social and educational aspects play a role. The activities organized by Meander range from interesting lectures to excursions abroad. During these activities, the academic background of the lecturer is also being addressed in order to establish a link with the future career of students of Arts and Architectural History.
MESA is the study association of the bachelor and master programs of Media Studies. The association aims to help the cultural and academic growth of its members as well as improve contact between them. Additionally, the association plays a vital role in promoting and introducing the bachelor to both new and prospective students.
MESA is comprised of various committees, each with their own objectives to help us achieve our goals. Numerous events are organized all year round such as the first years introduction camp, parties, trips, excursions and debates amongst other things and offers services such as high-quality summaries.
Multi is the study association of the bachelor programme Minorities & Multilingualism at the University of Groningen. Multi aims to create an atmosphere in which students can enjoy both study-related activities and undertake various leisure activities. The main activities are Coffee & Cookies sessions with lecturers, the Christmas dinner, and the MIX-feest and EsGalatie parties. The highlight of the year is the annual trip abroad!
NUTS has been the study association of the English department in Groningen for over 40 years, and we are still going strong. We make studying English a lot of fun by organising all sorts of activities throughout the year.
Our diverse events include: drinks, high-teas, pub crawls, pub quizzes, book clubs, game nights and career events. As a NUTS-member, you benefit from a discount on your study books at Studystore (via our website) and free entrance to most of our events. Besides this, NUTS annually organizes a trip abroad to for example the UK or Ireland.

Siduri aims to create a unifying environment for its students by organizing study related activities, such as symposia, lectures and trips to various Middle-Eastern countries, but also socials and an annual Christmas dinner.
Synthesis is the new study association for all Research Master students from the Faculty of Arts. Synthesis is both a social network and a platform for the academic development of young scholars. Given our shared interest in academic research, Synthesis organizes a variety of seminars, lectures and workshops about academic skills or career strategy with interesting speakers from different fields.
Synthesis also aims to create and maintain an active Research Master community by organizing social activities such as drinks, dinners and fun trips. Join our Facebook group for more information.
ZaZa Instituutsvereniging Nederlands is de studievereniging van de studie Nederlandse Taal en Cultuur aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. De vereniging is op 5 oktober 1992 opgericht door een aantal enthousiaste studenten, wat de ideale basis bleek voor de bloeiende vereniging die ZaZa vandaag de dag is. Als studievereniging voor Nederlands kan het niet anders dan dat ZaZa naar het ons zo geliefde alfabet is vernoemd: zonder letters immers geen literatuur en geen Nederlandse taal. Neem de eerste en de laatste letter van ons alfabet, verdubbel ze allebei, voeg een vleugje creativiteit toe en daar is onze naam: ZaZa. ZaZa heeft als doel om studenten met een passie voor de Nederlandse taal samen te brengen door middel van zowel studiegerelateerde als niet-studiegerelateerde activiteiten. Dat doel wordt nagestreefd met behulp van twaalf actieve commissies, twee lustrumcommissies en een ondersteunend orgaan. Op onze site zie je onder het kopje ‘Commissies’ wat zij zoal doen. Wanneer die activiteiten dit studiejaar plaatsvinden kun je zien onder het kopje ‘Agenda’. Neem gerust een kijkje.
