ACE Intensive Programme in Development Studies brings together students from Africa, China and Europe with a strong interest in development issues. ACE took place in rural Tanzania past years. In 2016 we will conduct ACE in rural China (Henan Province), thanks to unique local linkages of China Agricultural University. ACE is an event to learn, interact, and gain field work experience in rural settings as well as a one day orientation on large city planning in China.
Key themes of the course are:
- Village development (sociocultural life, traditional philosophy, rural reconstruction);
- Local economic development alternatives;
- Environment and natural resource management;
- Governance for equitable development;
- Population, health migration and urbanization;
- Group-based fieldwork in selected villages.
The tri-continental mix of students and staff makes it possible to discuss different approaches to development and various development experiences from Africa and China. Apart from preparatory reading and a final paper, students will learn through lectures, intensive group work, excursions, and field work in small groups experiencing village life. Thus, ACE facilitates a highly interactive learning environment where students can work together in analyzing development issues from a multidisciplinary and cross-cultural perspective.
