Teaching:
Coordinator Economic and Consumer Psychology (Bachelor, year 3), supervisor Bachelor's and Master's theses.

Research interests: I am interested in personal and group factors that drive individuals’ responses to global crises, in particular climate change. One research line I am currently working on focuses on personal and (perceived) group values. What values do individuals strongly endorse, what values do individuals perceive others to endorse, and how do such values influence individuals’ attitudes and behaviours?

Another line of research focuses on the interaction between individuals and technology, particularly within the energy domain. How can we better understand and consider the preferences and motivations of people within energy systems, how can we adjust technological innovations to user preferences and motivations, and can we give people a more active role within energy systems and the decision making about energy systems?

In my work, I collaborate with various partners in the field, such as municipalities (e.g., Groningen, Wageningen), national governments (e.g., Ministry of Economic and Climate Affairs), energy companies (Enexis, Alliander), nature organizations (e.g., WWF, Alliance for Nature, Groninger Landschap, Dutch Association of Zoos) and schools.

Adrien analyses the interest in and feasibility of citizen participation in energy governance. He is focusing on public participation in the context of the energy transition, examining the prospects for energy community development in the European context, as well as any other bottom-up initiative that advances the energy transition while evaluating the potential improvement of local democratic procedures and people's wellbeing.
Adrien's area of expertise is in the crossroads of Environmental psychology and energy law, attempting to address challenges by mobilising multiple fields of knowledge.

My research is part of the interdisciplinary EU project "CircEUlar" and revolves around understanding factors that influence whether people engage in circular consumption behaviors, such as refusing and rethinking consumption. I am particularly interested in circular citizenship behaviors, including activism and advocacy for a circular economy, as well as establishing new circular structures. To shed light on these behaviors, I focus on values, beliefs, personal and social norms, as well as efficacy beliefs and the ascription of responsibility. My focus areas are mobility, building and household services, and digitalisation.

My role will be centered on Work Package 4 within the 'GUIDE-BEST' (Antarctica) project, which aims to understand individual drivers of expectations and behaviors to promote sustainable tourism in Antarctica. Recently, there has been an increase in Antarctic tourism, leading more travelers returning as 'Antarctic ambassadors', experiencing a significant transformation in their lives. These individuals develop a deep appreciation for Antarctica, inspiring them to adopt more sustainable lifestyles and advocate for environmental conservation. I will be exploring what being an 'Antarctic ambassador' really means and the motivations behind this transformation. Additionally, I plan to investigate the behavioral changes tourists experience before and after their Antarctic visits in the upcoming months.

How pro-environmental actions relate to each other (especially: do people who behave pro-environmentally also support sustainable policies?) Teaching: Mentor Academic Skills and Research Practicum.
Research interests: I am particularly interested in how group factors can drive collective action in response to global challenges, in particular climate change and the energy transition. The research I am currently conducting is centred around energy community participation and trying to comprehend what group factors and settings motivate individuals to engage in community energy actions. This is based on the NWO funded ‘FlexECs’ project that I am a part of along with my supervisors dr. Thijs Bouman and dr. Elliot Sharpe. This fascinating project proposes novel ways in which we can design energy communities in combination with e-mobility. The FlexECs project as well as my original background in Geography have steered me towards asking questions about how certain social and spatial dynamics of groups and communities are linked and how this may influence the participation intentions of individuals, particularly with regards to community/collective action against climate change.
