Foreign Language for Social Justice: Empowering Students as Agents of Change

From protests against mass tourism in Spain to Palestinians resisting occupation, global struggles reveal deep inequalities. Foreign language education must address these realities, moving beyond superficial “diversity and inclusion” to confront (racial) capitalism—the root of exploitation and resource looting.

This workshop argues that language teaching carries social responsibility. Educators must help students recognize privilege, develop empathy, and adopt collectivist approaches to injustice. By integrating social justice into content and methodology, classrooms can foster dialogue, critical thinking, and action.

Students often face a world that silences marginalized voices. We’ll explore practical tools to bring relevant issues into the L2 classroom, adapting to students’ needs and language levels. Through multimodal texts and conversations about everyday actions (shopping, media, travel), students can practice agency and responsibility while learning the target language.

Join us to transform your L2 classroom into a space for justice, empowerment, and meaningful change.
