Beyond Accuracy: Alternatives in assessing (functional) English language competency

Language education has changed considerably over the past decades. We have moved from a focus on isolated language knowledge towards communicative competence, English for Specific Purposes, and cultural- and language awareness. But has our assessment changed with it?

Often, language assessment still focuses on prescribed, isolated language features and how accurately they are produced. Rather than on what learners can actually do with language. What might a workable alternative look like?

In this interactive workshop, we will explore different approaches to language assessment, reflect on our current practices, and consider realistic alternatives for secondary and vocational education. Together, we will identify changes that are not only desirable, but also practical and achievable in the classroom.
