Towards compassionate language teaching: addressing slavery and imperialism in the ELT classroom

Miss, slavery was abolished over 400 years ago. Why are these people still angry? Isn't that supid?' One of our students asked this question, and it shows the complexities of navigating interaction in a globalised world where students deal with an unprecedented degree of cultural and linguistic diversity. In this hands-on workshop, Helan and Nadia show how you can integrate language skills with competence in global citizenship, using a compassion-based approach to language teaching. We will explore best-practices, discover the concept of compassion-based language teaching, and discuss practical implementations in future lessons.
