Pre-master guide for students with a Dutch previous education

Please note: the deadline for application for the (pre-)master programme of Real Estate Studies is May 1st due to the selection procedure. The other programmes have the deadline of August 1st.

1. Choose a master programme

Come to our master programme presentations and to the pre-master presentation at the master event to help you make your choice of programme.

2. Check if you are directly admissible to the master programme of your choice

On the master programme webpages you can see if you are directly admissible to a master programme. If you are not, you can usually follow a pre-master programme. Once you have finished your pre-master you are directly admissible to the master. Do you have questions about if you are directly admissible after checking the website? Contact our Study Advice department via study.advice.fss rug.nl.

3. Check if you are admissable to the pre-master programme of your choice

  • Cultural Geography
    • Please contact cf-cg@rug.nl for more information
  • Economic Geography:
    • Please contact study.advice.fss@rug.nl for more information
  • Environmental and Infrastructure Planning:
    • You are admissible to the pre-master programme of EIP with every previous education.
  • Population Studies:
    • Please contact study.advice.fss@rug.nl for more information
  • Real Estate Studies:
  • Society, Sustainability and Planning:
    • You are admissible to the pre-master programme of SSP with every previous education.

Please note: If your study background is in a different field of expertise than planning or geography, your pre-master year might be more demanding. Please keep this in mind when you are thinking about starting a premaster programme at our faculty.

4. Check if you meet the additional admission requirements

English language requirement for all programmes (also for Cultural Geography)
  • English at VWO (Dutch higher education) level or equivalent to this level, with the subsequent test scores:
    • TOEFL iBT: (minimum overall score 90, reading 18, listening 18, speaking: 20, writing: 21)
    • IELTS: 6.5 (minimum if 6.0 on all sections)
    • Cambridge English C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency (CAE or CPE): minimum score of 169
  • You have to arrange the language test yourself. Please note that available spots might fill quickly, especially in July. For more information regarding the English requirements, please contact study.advice.fss rug.nl (also for Cultural Geography).
Your weighted average for all programmes
  • has to be 7,0 or higher (of year 2 until 4 of the Applied Sciences study programme if you have done this)

5. Apply at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences

  • Fill out the online application form and upload your documents. Please upload all your documents at the same time.
  • For Cultural Geography you apply via the Campus Fryslan faculty
  • After sending in the form you will receive information about registering in Studielink.
