Application and admission
International applicants can visit the application, registration and tuition fees page for the latest information.
Erasmus students who want to do a study abroad at the Faculty of Philosophy have to be nominated by their home university before they submit an application. Upon their nomination, they will receive instructions from the faculty's international office.
We refer applicants to the programme pages to check the IELTS or TOEFL requirement that is in place per programme.
Incoming exchange students from Erasmus+ partners in programme countries will only be nominated by their home universities in case they have at least CEFR B2 level of English (as agreed upon in the inter-institutional agreements).
Exchange students from Erasmus+ ICM partners as well as free mover exchange students will need to proof their English proficiency by submitting official test results (IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 580/92).
Applying for (student) accommodation in the Netherlands can be time-consuming and also be stressful if you apply too late. Please view the accommodation page of the university and make sure you apply early!
All international students are expected to arrive on time in Groningen, we advise to try and arrive during the last two weeks of August. We also urge all internationals to attend the university's Welcoming Ceremony which is held before the start of the academic year. During this day, a lot of practical matters can be arranged (think City Hall registration and making an appointment to open a Dutch bank account). You can sign up for introductory activities such as those organized by ESN. Our faculty's study association STUFF will also be in touch to introduce their own activities for new students.
Dutch language course
International degree students can register for a free Dutch language course at the University Language Centre.
The University's Student Service Centre (SSC) provides various types of services and counseling to (international) students, ranging from support for students with a disability, psychological support or study training.
