Financial Inclusion and Sustainable Growth | Looking back on a successful Summer School
Last July the Centre for International Banking, Insurance and Finance (CIBIF) organized a successful Summer School for nearly forty researchers, practitioners and MPhil and PhD students. The participants, originating from 17 countries, exchanged knowledge and experiences about financial inclusion and engaged in deep and intriguing discussions.
‘My experience with the summer school was exceptional’, says Sthandiwe Ngubane, MPhil Student from the University of Stellenbosch Business School. ‘ The school provided me with a platform to develop research networks and to meet with some leading researchers and professors in the field.’ Maryam Sholevar, PhD Student at SOAS University of London, was impressed by the successful international collaboration: ‘The effective interaction among the various nations accentuated the importance of the unity in finding the solution for challenges in financial inclusion. The high diversity of participants helped me to learn more about financial inclusion from different prospects. I have participated in many workshops throughout my careers, and it was one of the most influential events I have ever attended.’
Three courses, a research seminar and social activities
The Summer School included three courses, a research seminar in collaboration with the Economic and Social Research Council and the UK’s Department for International Development, and social activities. The lectures were given by the following experts:
- Impact of Financial Inclusion Interventions: Methods and Applications by Prof. Robert Lensink (University of Groningen and Wageningen University)
- Financial Inclusion: Financial Innovation and Cross Border Banking by Prof. Issouf Soumaré (Laval University)
- Financial Products for Financial Inclusion by Prof. Charles Adjasi (University of Stellenbosch)
