Brexit, Trump & the Dutch economy | Studium Generale lecture by Harry Garretsen and CPB Director Laura van Geest | 26 September

The threat of a global trade war, the ongoing Brexit negotiations and Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ speech seem to suggest that the economic borders between countries are closing up and that globalization is under pressure. But what are the pros and cons of globalization? Who are the winners and losers in today's world economy?

While most politicians and economists continue to focus mainly on the advantages of globalization, many citizens seem to be rather less confident about increasingly open economic borders. What causes these feelings, and what do the figures reveal about the Netherlands? Laura van Geest, Director of the CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, will answer these questions, focusing specifically on the position of the Netherlands.

This lecture will give the audience a unique opportunity to hear one of the country’s most important economic policy advisors discuss the possible consequences of present-day globalization for the Netherlands and Europe, to which Harry Garretsen, professor of International Economics & Business at the UG, will respond.
