BSc International Business - Numerus fixus

Admission

The Bachelor's degree programme in International Business (BSc IB) (Croho 50019) is a fixed quota programme (numerus fixus). The reason for this is the wide interest for the programme, which means that the programme gets more applications than there are places available.

For the BSc IB the fixed number of places available is 450. For these places, a selection procedure takes place. In order to have a chance to start the programme all candidates will have to apply in Studielink no later than 15 January 2019. Furthermore all candidates have to complete the application procedure outlined below before 1 February 2019 (except for the BSc IB web class for which the deadline is 15 February 2019).

Application procedure 2019-2020

The application procedure for the start of the BSc IB in September 2019 will open on 10 October 2018. The final deadline for application in Studielink is 15 January 2019.

The application procedure consists of the following steps:

Step 1: Registration in Studielink

All candidates have to apply for the Bachelor programme International Business (CROHO 50019) of the University of Groningen on Studielink, the central registration platform for higher education in the Netherlands. For questions about registration in Studielink, please contact Information Services.

  • In Studielink choose starting date: 1 September 2019 and make sure to choose Groningen as your preferred location.
Please follow the instructions in Studielink carefully!

Step 2: Diploma validation

› Applicants with a non-Dutch diploma or International / European Baccalaureate

Applicants with a non-Dutch diploma or International/European Baccalaureate who have completed their registration in Studielink, will receive instructions by email on how to access the RUG Online Admissions System (OAS). There you will need to upload the following documents:

  • passport
  • diploma
  • transcript of records
  • if necessary, an official English language test result

The admissions officer determines if your prior education is sufficient for principle admission to the University of Groningen .

Candidates who have to undertake this step, should also complete steps 3 and 4 below.

For questions about diploma validation, please contact the UG Admissions Office.

› Applicants with a Dutch (VWO) diploma

Applicants with a Dutch (VWO) diploma who have completed their registration in Studielink, should continue with steps 3 and 4.

Step 3: Complete the BSc IB web class

The web class International Business of the University of Groningen is designed to give you an impression of the range of topics addressed in the BSc IB. The web class consists of four modules addressing issues from globalization and cultural differences to accounting, marketing, and ethics. Each of the four modules is divided into submodules, and contains ten multiple choice questions for you to answer. While completing the web class is compulsory, your score is not taken into consideration. You will be able to see your score, but it is only intended to give you an indication of your affinity with the subject matter. The web class should take you no more than two hours.

The BSc IB web class will be available after 15 January 2019. You will then receive a link to the web class. Please note, the deadline for completing the web class is 15 February 2019.

Please note: If you have successfully completed the Pre-Academy international business web class then you do NOT have to complete the BSc IB web class. In this case please upload your Pre-Academy Certificate as proof of completing the web class. This document can be uploaded as a PDF in the web form (see step 5).

Step 4: Write a motivation letter

All candidates have to write a motivation letter (in English) of maximum 500 words, addressing the following four points

  1. Your overall motivation for applying for the bachelor programme in International Business at the University of Groningen.
  2. International aspects of your background. Briefly describe any relevant international education, exchange, or extracurricular activities and how you benefited from these experiences.
  3. What’s in it for you: How do you expect the bachelor programme in International Business to contribute to your future in general and your career in particular?
  4. What’s in it for us? What kind of a contribution do you see yourself making to the classroom experience of your fellow International Business students?

This document can be uploaded as a PDF in the web form (see step 5).

Step 5: Fill out and submit the BSc IB selection web form

All candidates will have to fill out the official BSc IB selection web form in order to participate in the BSc IB selection procedure. In this web form, we will ask you for a number of personal details and a number of other questions concerning your secondary school grades and motivation, evidence for your English language proficiency, evidence for finishing the web class, add relevant additional education, (work)experience and notable achievements. We will also ask you to upload documents of proof for all these aspects, as well as your motivation letter.

You will receive a link to the BSc IB selection web form as soon as possible after your registration for the BSc IB in Studielink. Please be aware that the email may end up in the spam folder of your mailbox, so please check the spam folder regularly.

The BSc IB selection web form combined with the additional documents of proof will be your personal BSc IB selection file for the selection procedure.

The final deadline to submit the BSc IB selection web form is 1 February, 2019. Please note, forms submitted after the deadline will not be processed.

For questions regarding technical or procedural issues only, please contact ibselection@rug.nl (please include your full name and RUG student number in your email).

How does the selection procedure work?

The BSc IB programme management will review all individual applications of candidates that

  • are in principle admissible to the University of Groningen based on their prior education
  • have successfully completed the steps above, and
  • have not already participated in the BSc IB selection procedure three times before

The individual candidate will be rewarded with a score on the different components of their BSc IB selection file. The overall scores of the individual candidate will be compared to the scores of the entire cohort of candidates, in order to reward the individual candidate a specific place in the ranking. The BSc IB programme management rewards individual scores on the various components in the BSc IB selection file 2019 based on the following selection criteria:

  • Cognitive skills of the candidate
The BSc IB programme management will evaluate the relevant cognitive skills of each individual candidate, based on their previous school results, the proficiency in Mathematics and English.
  • Motivation of the candidate
The BSc IB programme management will evaluate the motivation of each individual candidate, based on their motivation letter.
  • International orientation of the candidate
The BSc IB programme management will evaluate the international orientation of each individual candidate, considering for instance possession of a non-Dutch secondary school diploma, evidence of having spent a substantial period of time or schooling abroad, or having held a (summer) job or internship abroad.

The BSc IB programme management will score and rank all candidates and give each a unique spot in the ranking. This ranking will be in the form of a number: 001 or higher. On 15 April 2019 all candidates who successfully participated in the selection procedure will receive their individual ranking.
