What to do before your exchange

Student exchange at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB)

We offer student exchanges for one semester (Fall or Spring) or for a full academic year.

1. Check if you are eligible

  • Your home university has an exchange agreement with us (check with your local international office)
  • Your home university has selected you for an exchange at our university
  • You study a major in economics and/or business
  • You have taken a minimum of 10-12 courses (60 ECTS) in the field of economics and business before coming to Groningen. Students should have covered subjects such as statistics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, (financial) accounting and research methods.
  • For an exchange at Master's level you must have a bachelor degree in an economics or business related field of study.
  • Your command of English is sufficient, see language requirements.

2. Get nominated by your home university

Your home university will nominate you in our Mobility Online System. When your nomination has been accepted, you will receive a link generated from Mobility Online to apply and upload your documents.

Nomination deadlines

  • Semester 1 (Fall) or full year: 15 April

  • Semester 2 (Spring): 1 October

3. Apply

Apply online and upload the following documents before the deadline:

  • Copy of your bachelor transcript in English
  • Copy of your English language proficiency certificate
  • photocopy of passport or European ID card. We will check if you need a visa or residence permit for your study in the Netherlands. We only need to see the following information: issuing country, full name, date of birth, date of expiry. Please feel free to blur all other information.
  • Master students only: copy of your Bachelor’s degree in the field of economics and/or business
  • Application deadlines:
    For Autumn entry (early September) - semester exchange or full academic year:
    Non-EU studentes : 1 May
    EU- students: 15 May

    For Spring entry (early February):
    Non-EU studentes : 6 October
    EU- students: 15 October

4. Get accepted

When you are accepted we will send you an acceptance letter.

5. Get a student number and a RUG email address

The exchange office will make a student number and a RUG email address for you.

6. Visa and residence permit

You may need a visa and/or residence permit, depending on your nationality. If so, the university's Immigration Service Desk (ISD) will need to apply for such a document on your behalf.

7. Apply for accommodation

After having been accepted, students can book accommodation. We admvise to book accommodation as soon as the booking system is open. See here for information

8. Health insurance

Health Insurance that also covers accidents and payment of bills outside your home country is compulsory. See here for information.

9. Student Card

You will receive the university card once. The card remains valid until the end of your registration period. The university card can be used:

  • at the printers and photocopiers, to borrow books from the University Library,
  • as proof of identity when you register for and sit exams,
  • to use the facilities of the Sports Centre ACLO, provided you bought your ACLO Card.

In the weeks before your arrival to Groningen, the university's central student administration will send you an email that includes your student number. In this email message you will also find instructions how to upload your passport photograph for your student card. Once you uploaded your picture, it will show up in Progress. After uploading your photograph, it takes about 3 weeks to process your picture and produce your university card.

Troubleshooting

If you experience any IT problems or you have a question with regards to uploading your photograph, you may need to contact the IT department of the university.

Information Services which is located in the Academy Building, is responsible for the production of your student card. If you uploaded your photograph, but did not yet receive your card, please visit the USD. Information Services will then check the status of your card. Please visit their website to view their opening hours and address.

You can deposit money on your university card via myPrint.

Lost and theft

If you lose your university card or if it is stolen:

Please note that once your university card has been blocked, the card can not be unblocked. You must request a new University card.

10. Choose your courses

11. Schedule

When the course schedule is online, you should check if the courses that you have selected fit or overlap with the course and exam schedule. If yes, you may need to change your courses.

12. Learning agreement

Do you have a learning agreement? You can submit it online via your home university's online system, or you can send it to exchange.in.feb@rug.nl.

If you don't have a learning agreement, please login to Mobility Online and ask approval for the courses that you wish to take.

You should have asked for approval for your courses before you register for your courses (see next step).

15. Group enrolment for courses

Most courses work with tutorial or practical groups. After course registration you will be informed how to enroll in a group. Group enrolment is organized by the course coordinator and (s)he will use Brightspace (our online learning environment) to send you information.

Group enrolment is often self enrolment via a first come, first served system so be online when group enrolment opens. The enrolment periods vary per course.
