There has been increasing interest and accomplishments in qualitative research in different domains, such as social sciences, public health, commerce and business studies etc . Qualitative research is primarily used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, motivations, perceptions and experiences. This provides insight into the problem at hand, or helps developing ideas or hypotheses for quantitative research.

Qualitative data analysis is a rigorous process, in which researchers engage with the data systematically to uncover its deeper meanings. Through qualitative data analysis, researchers aim to uncover and/or understand the bigger picture in connection to the research problem. They use the data to describe a particular phenomenon and what it means. Qualitative analysis involves labelling and coding the data, in order to recognize similarities and differences, for instance between different groups of participants and points in time.

The winter school will cover key issues related to qualitative data analysis. We will go through the whole process of data-analysis, from transcription and data preparation, to coding, categorizing and synthesizing. We will work both on paper and use software. The highlight of this Winterschool is the use of Atlas.ti qualitative data analysis software.

This winter school will be held in the form of a mentored workshop. This means that the number of participants will be small (max. 15), and that participants will be able to receive detailed feedback and guidance from the staff involved.
