OnderwijsUniversity of Groningen Summer SchoolsAn excellent research university

Internationalization is an important instrument for improving quality, innovation and diversity in both education and research. Today, the University of Groningen has more than 5000 international students from over 120 different countries. Almost 20% of our staff and 55% of all PhD students are from abroad.

Strategic partners and networks

There are many types of international cooperation in both teaching and research. Strategic partners and networks at the University of Groningen include:

  • the U4 network with Uppsala, Göttingen and Ghent
  • the Coimbra Group
  • Tsinghua, Fudan and Peking Universities in China
  • Osaka in Japan
  • IT Bandung and Gadja Madah in Indonesia
  • Sao Paulo and UNAM in Latin America
  • UBC and Maryland in North America.

International partners

Many of our degree programmes work intensively with international partners. We have as many as eight prestigious Erasmus Mundus programmes, and the number of Double Degree programmes or joint doctorate programmes is rapidly increasing. Researchers and students from our international partners also participate in our summer schools. Lastly, we have a large network of exchange partners. Student and staff exchanges form an important part of our internationalization policy. We not only want students to come to us in Groningen, but also to have at least half of all our students to have gained experience abroad during their studies.

International reputation

All of the above has helped us build a strong international reputation, and the University of Groningen is proud to be among the global elite with a classification in the top 100 of the Shanghai ARWU, the QS World University Rankings, and the THE World University Rankings.
