As a university student, one of the questions that often plague your mind will probably be “should I get a Master’s degree”. It is either because you are not yet ready to become an adult (me), your parents expect you to get one, or you just really like your Bachelor’s and would like to continue your journey in academia.

It doesn’t matter which one of the reasons apply. An issue is always going to be: how to find the perfect programme for you, and your future.

Therefore, I came up with a list of tips and tricks which helped me on my journey!

The best lists are always made right after a breakdown.

#1 Make a list of the programmes you are interested in

One of the hardest parts about finding a programme which suits you, is finding a programme in which you are really interested. Whether it be a programme directly related to your Bachelor’s or one related to something completely different, now is the time to dive into all your options!

I would recommend you pick something you know you would truly enjoy in the future. The best way to determine this is to look back at what subjects you thought were the most enjoyable. For example, did you like your Corporate Marketing course more than another course? Maybe have a look at the MSc Marketing Programme!

Time runs when you are having fun, or just panicking.

#2 Pinpoint if you want to move or stay at your current university

Do you want to explore what other universities have to offer? Or does your current university have everything you could ever ask for? This is a question you have to ask yourself. There are many universities around the world, so this can be a hard choice.

This step can be hard to make, but I would look at the Universities rankings and internationalization. For example, the UG is ranked 79th in the world and has a large number of internationals! If you have always wanted to study abroad but felt uneasy making such a big decision, now is your chance to do so!

Personally, not to have to work full time yet...

#3 Look at which programmes relating to your wishes are offered at your university

I will admit I have spent an unprecedented amount of time looking at the list of Master’s programmes offered at the UG. Every couple of months, I find a new one which I think could be fun. This ranges from International Relations, to Marketing and many more. This is also the time where you can pinpoint if you want an English or Dutch Master's degree, a Research Master, Double degree or a standard programme. It is all in your hands!

Everyone hates a know-it-all, but they usually are right...

#4 Make a spreadsheet with all the programmes you are interested in (include location/price/cost of living/admission requirements/application documents needed)

This might sound a little far fetched, however if you are planning on applying to multiple programmes, creating a spreadsheet will be your saving grace. With this you can keep track of all important documents, deadlines as well as help narrow down which programme admission you accept. You can also add the living costs into the spreadsheet, and the costs of moving. It may seem a little tedious, but trust me, it will help give you a clearer sense of where and what you want to study.

#5 Attend an open day where you can ask questions

A Master’s Week is one of the best places to get a feel of the university and the programme you are interested in. If you can’t make it to Groningen for the next Master’s Week no worries! They are often streamed and or you can find a recording online after the fact. Of course the best is for you to be here in person, to truly get a feel of everything. Don’t forget the next Master’s Week is this month from the 18th-22nd of March!

Run boi run!

#6 Start applying! (make sure to pay all required fees)

Make sure to apply before the deadline! This way you are also more likely to get a response earlier. If you are non-EU this is especially important because of visa requirements and applications!

Let's be honest, this is the step no one wants to have to do.

#7 Update the spreadsheet with acceptances and rejections

It might not be the best feeling to add rejections, but the acceptances will surely help lower the sting!

I hope this list helped you figure out how to make your way through this time of your life. Now all you have to do is go set them in play before the application deadline!
