New international students are welcomed in Groningen with a range of introduction events. These events will help you feel at home in Groningen right away.
The University organises an official Welcoming Ceremony for all new international students at the beginning of both the first and second semester. During the interactive Welcoming Ceremony, all new international students will be welcomed by distinguished speakers such as the President of the University and Nobel Prize winner Ben Feringa. Students are invited to attend a variety of fun, interesting workshops and learn all about what the University and city of Groningen have to offer (in terms of, for example, sports and cultural facilities, international student associations and university facilities) at the information fair. We will end the day in celebration of your arrival with live music, dancing, drinks and snacks. The Welcoming Ceremony is the perfect opportunity to meet fellow international students and staff of the university and its faculties!
All new international students should receive an invitation from the University. If for some reason you do not receive such an invitation, please contact email@example.com. Attending the ceremony is free of charge. New international students are strongly advised to attend. The first upcoming welcoming ceremony will take place on Thursday 30 August 2018 .
Introduction Week ESN
After the Welcoming Ceremony, the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Groningen organises an Introduction Week for International students. During the week, you will be divided into groups of around twelve international students and two introduction guides. These guides are Dutch students or internationals that have lived in Groningen for a longer period of time and can show you all the interesting ins and outs. The Introduction Week includes cultural events and tours of the city, sports, Dutch language lessons, parties and dinners. The ESN Introduction Week will take place from September 1st - September 6th. Visit the ESN Groningen website to register for the introduction week. UG student Brielle wrote a blog about the week, and Joey took over our instagram account last year, so you should check those out to get an impression of what ESN is like!
In addition to the Welcoming Ceremony and the Introduction week for international students, Groningen is well known for its awesome general introduction programme for all new students in Groningen called the KEI-week. In a KEI-group consisting of 12 to 15 first-year students and two to three senior students, you will explore Groningen and you will be introduced to several student activities. During the KEI-week you can visit information markets and get into contact with all the fraternities and student societies. You will have a taste of the cultural and sporting facilities that Groningen has to offer and get to know new people. Kei-week 2018 will take place from the 13th - 17th of August.
Faculty introduction programmes
Many faculties and degree programmes organise their own introductory programme for new international students and guests. During these activities, you will get to know your fellow students, the faculty or department and its staff, and you will receive further information about modules, procedures, schedules, facilities and more. Please check with your faculty coordinator or programme coordinator for further details.N.B. In addition to the faculty introduction programmes, the faculties advise international students to take part in the Official Welcoming Ceremony and the ESN Introduction Week.
