Anthropocene: How Humans Shape(d) the Earth

Anthropocene Island Landscapes

Immerse yourself in Schiermonnikoog through a walk-through exhibition featuring games, visuals, and sensory experiences in the garden of the Academy Building!

This activity will represent the dynamic island landscapes of Schiermonnikoog, which were shaped over time through the interaction between humans and their environments. The exhibition brings Schiermonnikoog to life through sensory guessing games and knowledge quizzes. Visitors can delve into the island's history and its evolution over time, whilst understanding how the island's landscapes have been shaped by both natural and human processes. The exhibition features an interactive topographic timeline tracing the island's geographical and human development from 1815 to the present, a dark room where you can interact with bioluminescent algae (glowing algae), and an educational stand about plant and bird life within the Academy Building's garden area with an interactive categorisation game. The goal of the exhibition is to not just display the landscapes of Schiermonnikoog, but to invite reflection on how anthropogenic influence shaped the island.
