Programme committee & Board of Examiners

Programme committee

The Honours College has a Programme Committee. The task of the programme committee is to issue solicited or unsolicited recommendations or proposals to the Dean concerning any matters regarding the teaching within the Honours programme. Therefore, the programme committee's purpose is to improve the quality of the Honours Programme. This means that anything related to the quality of the Honours Programme may be a topic for discussion in the meetings. During such discussions, the opinions of student members and staff members carry equal weight. Almost every faculty is represented by a staff and student member. For more information about the work and the composition of the committees, contact Suzanne Hack (official secretary) via honours rug.nl.

The Board of Examiners

The main task of the Board of Examiners is to determine whether a student fulfills the conditions laid down in the Education and Assessment Regulations (EAR) regarding the knowledge, understanding and skills required to pass the relevant final examination. For more information about the work and the composition of the board, contact Suzanne Hack (official secretary) via honours.boardofexaminers rug.nl.

Education and Assessment Regulations (EAR)

To meet the educational quality requirements, the Honours College created the 'Education and Assessment Regulations' (EAR), based on the UG model 'Teaching and Examination Regulations' (TER). Honours students can also find a digital version of the EAR in the Student Portal Honours organization.

For more information about the procedure and composition of the Board of Examiners for the Honours Programme, please contact the official secretary, Suzanne Hack via honours.boardofexaminers rug.nl.

Follow-up  - 100% Attendance - Do’s and Don’ts at the Honours College

Continuation in the Honours Programme

To be eligible for continuation in the Honours College, you must remain enrolled in the same Bachelor's degree programme at the University of Groningen. By the beginning of the second year, you must have participated in the broadening activities and, where possible, earned ECTS credits in the deepening component. In addition, you must have earned 60 ECTS credits in the first year of your regular programme. To progress to the third year, you need at least 15 ECTS from Honours modules (cumulative across years 1 and 2) and 55 ECTS from your second year of regular programme.

Inactivity and Deregistration

If you stop participating in Honours activities or do not respond to communications from the Honours College, your registration may be terminated. This can happen if you don’t attend Honours events or modules and fail to respond to follow-up messages within eight weeks. Before taking such action your faculty Honours coordinator or study advisor will be consulted. You will always be informed if your registration in the Honours College is officially ended.

100% Attendance

Please be aware that a 100% attendance requirement applies to all Honours modules. The Honours College generally enforces this rule strictly. However, exceptions may be considered in cases of illness, unforeseen academic obligations related to your regular degree programme, or serious personal circumstances (e.g. the loss of a close family member). If you find yourself in one of these situations, please contact both the Honours College and your lecturer as soon as possible. If you don’t inform the lecturer about your absence, you may be excluded from the module.

Do’s and Don’ts at the Honours College

At the University of Groningen, punctuality is important—you are expected to arrive on time, be prepared, and be ready to participate actively from the scheduled start of each class. Although Dutch universities are generally not very hierarchical, it is still important to communicate with lecturers in a respectful manner. The Honours Programme offers an academic experience that goes beyond the regular curriculum. All students are expected to contribute to a respectful, inclusive, and engaging learning environment. This means treating peers, staff, and lecturers with respect, regardless of background or opinion, and fostering a space where diverse perspectives are welcomed. You are also responsible for checking your university email regularly and staying informed about relevant deadlines and procedures. Finally, students are expected to represent the Honours Programme in a positive and professional way, demonstrating curiosity, integrity, and a willingness to collaborate and learn.

Strategic plan

The Honours College is committed to provide a challenging learning environment in which talent is recognized and fostered. As such, it contributes to society: students from across the university are encouraged to tackle complex problems from different disciplinary perspectives. The Honours College is an interdisciplinary and international community in which students deepen and broaden their knowledge and skills.

Diversity, innovative potential, inclusion and involvement are the core values that guide the behaviour and attitude of students, lecturers and employees at the Honours College. Through these values we try to create an environment in which different ideas, backgrounds and skills contribute to the development of talent, creativity and innovation in our learning community.

Our mission and vision result in an ambitious, challenging co-curricular Honours Programme that can be tailored to the students' individual needs and talents. Our strategic goals focus on strengthening the Honours College's role as a testing ground for innovations, further developing the interdisciplinary nature of the programme and the learning community, improving the integration of the theme of 'employability', improving quality assurance systems and working towards a national quality standard for university Honours Programme.
