Radiation protection unit

If you work or are going to work with ionizing radiation (radioactive substances, X-ray devices or accelerators), special regulations apply. Before you can start using ionizing radiation, an Internal Authorization is required, issued by the Radiation Protection Unit (SBE) of the University of Groningen (RUG).

Organisation

The SBE is part of the Health department of University Services and is chaired by the general coordinating radiation expert, Dr. H.F. Boersma. The university is divided into four entities, each of which is coordinated by a radiation commissioner from the SBE.

Radiation Safty Handbook and Internal Authorization

For each Internal Authorization, the Executive Board (CvB) of the Groningen University appoints a local Radiation Protection Officerf (RPO) who supervises all actions involving ionizing radiation. A full description of the radiation protection organization of the University of Groningen and the rules for applying and having an Internal Authorization are found in the Radiation Safety Handbook. If you intend to apply for an Internal Authorization, you must timely contact your radiation commissioner or the general coordinating radiation expert.

Working with radiation and Education on Radiation Protection

If you are going to work with ionizing radiation within the RUG, you must follow the instructions of the local Radiation Protection Officer (RPO). Depending on the application, you may first have to successfully complete a training for RPO. If you are going to work with ionizing radiation outside the RUG, the university also strives to ensure an adequate level of radiation protection. In that case, observe the following instructions (in English).
