Accommodation

Finding somewhere to live can be daunting, especially if you are moving to the Netherlands for the first time. Around 10,000 students will all be looking for a room at the same time in Groningen and Leeuwarden so start your search as soon as possible. It is your own responsibility to find a place to live. The University of Groningen does NOT provide accommodation for students. Please check at home in Groningen for available accommodation.
Start your search in time
Groningen is a popular student city. Every year, around 10,000 students go looking for a room. The number of students is also increasing in Leeuwarden. Compared to other cities, it is not always easy to find accommodation here quickly, so start on time.
Our main tip: start looking in April. Use your network, sign up to multiple platforms, and be active. If you only start in the summer holidays, you run the risk of low availability. As soon as you know you are going to study in Groningen or Leeuwarden, it is best to start looking immediately.
Do you really have to live in the city because of your studies, for example because travelling is not an option? Then it is important to make arrangements in good time. So don't wait until the last minute.
Groningen is a popular student city and finding a room is not always easy. Will you be coming? Then keep in mind that you might have to stay in a hotel if you can't find a room in time. These costs are at your own expense; the RUG does not facilitate rooms for Dutch students.
Temporary accommodation
SSH (Stichting Studenten Huisvesting) offers a limited number of temporary rooms for new international students.
These rooms go quickly, so register and book early. Availability is limited and first-come, first-served.

A useful starting place when searching for housing is www.athomeingroningen.com.
