3.3. Intervision (peer advising groups) and individual coaching

In fulfillment of the Qualification of Supervision Excellence at the UG

You have taken the online course “Successful PhD Supervision”, and participated (or planned to participate) in some related workshops. In addition, you would like to further discuss specific cases and situations, share your experience, and learn from the experience of your colleagues under the facilitation of a coach. If this is the case, it is a good option for you to either join an intervision group or schedule individual sessions with a coach.

Objective

The goal of the intervision and coaching sessions is to address specific issues that you come across in your role as supervisor, and, with the help of your peers and the coach, find out how you can improve a situation of impasse, or further refine your supervisory skills.

Programme

Intervision: By joining an intervision group you’ll have the opportunity to share your experiences, give and be given confidential advice together with a small group of colleagues from different faculties of the UG. The group meets regularly every month together with a facilitator to exchange experiences and share good practices in supervision. Feel free to join for 1, 2 or more sessions.

Coaching: In alternative, you can schedule 1-3 individual sessions with a coach. This is particularly helpful if you are dealing with a specific issue related to supervision or prefer to reflect on a situation in a confidential manner. Individual coaching session is also a mode that some of us prefer to group interaction, so we are happy to offer it.

Results

By the end of the intervision or individual coaching session you will have:

  • Addressed specific cases of supervision and received advice from colleagues and coach
  • Reflected on the practical application of the theory acquired during the online course and workshops
  • Recognized commonalities with other supervisors
  • Exchanged expertise and good practices of supervision with peers and coach
  • Found a way forward to situations of impasse
