My Future Career

Career orientation course for PhD students

You are currently working on a PhD research project and that probably has your hands full. At the same time, you wonder what your future career will look like. Have you considered what you would like to do with your PhD degree? Do you want to continue as a researcher? Would you rather find a job outside of academia? Which talents do you want to develop further and in which direction? Whichever way you want to go, we help you to prepare for your career after your PhD. In order to be well prepared for the labor market we offer you the two and a half day training course My Future Career.

Objective

This training course is an opportunity to discover your personal qualities and skills, to get an idea of your ideal work situation and to create a relevant search profile. RUG University values your personal development. Therefore, we stimulate and support you in actively shaping your own career and developing yourself in the direction or job that you aspire to.

Content

It is impossible to contemplate the next step in your career (either within or outside academia) without considering ‘the psychology of the choice process’. In this course, you will:

Have insight into your personal and career goals.
Learn more about the labor market inside and outside academia.
Gain a better view on how your talents, your personal values and motivations complement your skills to help you carve your own career path.
Learn how to present yourself and your goals.
Enhance your practical career skills (in a global world).
  Formulate a personal career plan.
Make informed choices concerning the next steps in your career.

Although you probably won’t have made a firm decision by day 3, you will have made a start on the process.

The course is spread across two-and-a-half days, with a few weeks between the sessions.

  • Day 1: Values and personal qualities - What are your talents and how to describe them?
  • Day 2: Motivation, working environment and paths of enquiry - How do you make choices and communicate them?
  • Day 3: Narrative and action plan - What are your career goals and how do you present them?

The course material is in English.

Results

At the end of the course, you will have a better understanding of your qualities and your personality. You will also have gained insight into the opportunities on the job market, enabling you to shape your career by compiling a step-by-step plan.

"It made me really focus on what are my strengths and goals, and how to best convey that also during an interview. Having done this for the course made me much more aware of my core qualities and pitfalls, and such awareness was appreciated in recent interviews that I had." - Aurora Signorazzi, two months after completing the course.
