Long-Term Data Storage with the RDMS

Long-term storage of research data — in other words, data archiving — is a vital part of the research workflow. To support this, the CIT provides the Research Data Management System (RDMS) as a secure, reliable, and accessible solution. The workshop will show you why long-term data storage matters, introduce you to the RDMS environment, and guide you through best practices for storing, organizing, and sharing data in the system.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is intended for all researchers and research support staff who are either already using the RDMS or plan to use it in the future. Whether you are archiving completed project data, organizing collaborative datasets, or planning long-term preservation strategies, this session will help you make the most of the RDMS.

We ask participants to:

• Bring their laptops
• Log in once to the RDMS
  

Goal

During this session, we will cover:

✅ The difference between short-term and long-term storage.
✅ Existing storage solutions at the university and how RDMS fits in.
✅ Accessing the RDMS via the web interface, command line, and transfer tools such as Cyberduck, WinSCP, and iCommands.
✅ Understanding the different RDMS environments — personal and group (Team Drives).
✅ How to share data securely within the RDMS.

By the end of the session, participants will understand how to store, organize, and share research data effectively for the long term, and how to use the RDMS to support their research in compliance with best practices.

Enrollment and course fee

Attendance is free for UG staff and PhD-students, but registration is required.
