UG Alumni in Twente Meeting

On 8 April, Prof. Tjalling Halbertsma will take you on a historical journey from the Mongolian Empire to 13th century Europe. Halbertsma has also been a special guest on the popular Dutch programme 'De Wereld Draait Door'.
Everyone has heard of the world-famous explorer Marco Polo who traveled from Europe to China. But only a few people know his Asian counterpart, Rabban Sauma. In the 13th century, Sauma traveled from present-day Beijing to Europe. His journey and his encounters with European rulers are well documented in his diary. In the footsteps of monk Rabban Sauma, Halbertsma partly followed the same journey. Who was this Asian traveler and why did he visit Rome and Paris? What did he have in common with the West and why was this Asian explorer so quickly forgotten?

As an alum of the University of Groningen, you are cordially invited to join this guest lecture.
Please register before April 1.
